I've
been playing dress-up since age 5 in New York, when I paraded around
the house in my Grandmother's 1950's silk-satin party gowns and gilded
leather pumps.
Mom made my first real costume; an iridescent green satin medieval
princess gown with a matching princess hat, and long, pointed, leopard-print
sleeves. By the looks of it today, I wore the heck out of it, long
beyond when I oughta have.
No wonder I feel so at home here in New Orleans, and why I love Mardi
Gras so much !!
I haven't
missed a Carnival Day since I arrived here 15 years ago. I take every
opportunity to attend the many themed costume parties between Twelfth
Night (January 6) and Lundi Gras (Monday night before Mardi Gras Day).
I gather inspiration and fabric and trim throughout the year, but
usually wait till the last possible moment to make my own costume.
I'm busy up till then creating Ready to Wear costume pieces for the
shop - like Wig Hats, Capes, Tutus and Crowns.
I'm still sewing on that same old Pfaff that Mom made my costumes
on .... it was born the same year I was, and it's still purring along.
I've included a limited number of pictures here, so please check back
closer to Mardi Gras for more !
